WISDOM OF THE NIGHT
WEIRD WIKI OF THE NIGHT
ARTICLE OF THE NIGHT
Every festival should be a festival for all people, but sadly, we’re not there yet. When it comes to current festivals, women and people of color are seen as the showcase token ‘celebrities’ (“Hey, did you know our craft beer festival features 8 different women and black brewers?!”) rather than an integration… It’s like the news publicizing there’s an African-American Santa Claus at the mall during Christmas time. While it means well, to me, that causes more separation than anything else.
In Portland every year, the wonderful SheBrew festival, a festival of all women brewers, has nothing to do with gatekeeping, but rather delivers a loud stance to the VERY predominately white male industry/culture, “Hey, we exist, and we’re not going anywhere, so let’s be friends?”. The exact same thing can be said for festival mentioned in the article below. Nothing about exclusivity, in an industry that is certainly headed than way, in my opinion.
Maybe there is fear of separation between races. Only time will tell. But at the moment, I see no other good solutions, so it’s better than doing nothing.
